Aim of this survey
The Annual Railways Investment Survey is conducted by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) on behalf of the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) under Ministerial Direction. It measures the expenditure of railway companies in Great Britain.
ORR aggregates the investment figures for all the companies in Great Britain and publishes them as yearly estimate in the Rail finance statistical release and from the data portal.
What you need to know
To complete the survey, you will need the following information:
- expenditure broken down into track and signalling, rolling stock, stations and other rail
The questions are then broken down further into acquisitions and disposals costs.
All information you provide is strictly confidential.

Selection criteria: UK railway businesses registered for Value Added Tax (VAT) and/or Pay as You Earn (PAYE)
Sample: approximately 40
Frequency: annually
Dispatch date: 30 March
Return-by date: 12 April

The Annual Railways Investment Survey is conducted under the provisions of the Statistics of Trade Act 1947. Once selected, your business is legally obliged to comply. You cannot appeal your selection.
