  • 2011 Census analysis: How do living arrangements, family type and family size vary in England and Wales?

    Using new data from the 2011 Census, we look at family size and family types within England and Wales, and how this varies by country of birth. Family types include married couples, cohabiting couples and lone parents with or without children. The proportion of families that were married couples (with or without children) declined from 70% in 2001 to 65% in 2011, with cohabiting couples and lone parent families increasing over the same period. The majority of families (85%) were found to have a UK-born family reference person (FRP).

    Using 2011 Census data, this analysis is the first to calculate disability-free life expectancy (DFLE) by the newly established NHS clinical commissioning groups (CCGs). DFLE indicates the number of years an individual might expect to spend free from a limiting disability or health problem in his or her lifetime. Results show that females and those living in the north of England spend more of their life with a disability, compared with males and those living in the south of England.

  • 2011 Census analysis: Healthy Life Expectancy at Birth and at Age 65- Clinical Commissioning Groups 2010-12

    This is the first analysis to examine differences in healthy life expectancy (HLE) and how these compare across England. HLE adds value to life expectancy (LE) by estimating the average lifespan spent in a favourable state of health, based on self-assessed general health. The areas with the highest HLE were clustered to the south and west of London, whereas the areas with the lowest HLE were found in the North, the Midlands and some ethnically diverse parts of East London.

    Using historic and 2011 Census data, we look at the immigration patterns of residents who were born outside the UK. Over the past 60 years the population has become more diverse, with an increase in the number of residents who were born outside the UK, from just 4.3% in 1951 to 13% in 2011. The top 5 non-UK countries of birth in 2011 were India, Poland, Pakistan, Republic of Ireland and Germany. We also discuss the possible reasons for migration to the UK.

    Using 2011 Census data, we look at residents living in overcrowded and under-occupied households and their general health. Results show residents living in overcrowded households reported significantly higher levels of “not good” health compared with those living in under-occupied households. Young people (aged 0 to 15) were more than twice as likely to report “not good” health if they lived in overcrowded households.

    We take a look at ethnicity in the labour market using data from the 2011 Census and the Labour Force Survey (LFS). Analysis includes economic activity, characteristics of employment, gender differences and young people in the labour market. Evidence has shown that patterns of economic activity vary widely across different ethnic minority groups with some groups experiencing lower employment than others. In the 2011 Census, the “Other White” ethnic group had the highest employment rate of all ethnic groups at 77%. This was the case for both males and females.

    We examine couples (either married, in a civil partnership, or cohabiting) who each identify with a different ethnic group. This analysis explores some of the different factors that may affect the number of inter-ethnic relationships, including ethnic group, gender, age, type of relationship and dependent children. Exploring inter-ethnic relationships provides further insight into the patterns and trends of an increasingly ethnically diverse population. In 2011 nearly 1 in 10 people who were living as part of a couple were in an inter-ethnic relationship, an increase from 2001.
