Designation can be broadly interpreted to mean that the statistics:

  • meet identified user needs
  • are well explained and readily accessible
  • are produced according to sound methods
  • are managed impartially and objectively in the public interest

Once statistics have been designated as National Statistics it is a statutory requirement that the Code of Practice shall continue to be observed.

Changes to this release date

  • Previous date:
    6 December 2021 09:30
    Reason for change:
Publication of 2020-based interim national population projections has been delayed. Delaying this release will allow sufficient time to use the latest and best available death occurrences data, which maximises the quality and relevance of the projections throughout the subsequent projections period. We have engaged with key stakeholders to understand their timescales for planned onward uses of these statistics and are aiming to minimise adverse impacts from the delay.
  • Previous date:
    2 December 2021 09:30
    Reason for change:
Date changed to potentially enable publication of national population projections with publication of past and projected period and cohort life tables on the same date.
