Statistics are most often revised for 1 of 2 reasons:

  1. For certain statistics initial estimates are released with the expectation that these may be revised and updated as further data becomes available.
  2. Revisions may also be made when methods or systems are changed.

These types of planned revisions should not be confused with errors in released statistics, which are genuine mistakes. Such mistakes occur rarely and, when they do happen, corrections are made in a timely manner, announced and clearly explained to users in line with the Code of Practice for Official Statistics (Principle 2, Practice 7).

As announced on 18 February 2019, an error occurred in tables associated with Wealth in Great Britain Wave 5: July 2014 to June 2016. This affects measures of aggregate wealth primarily, though all other indicators such as medians have been affected to some degree. This was due to the incorrect population estimates being used for the survey weights for data relating to Wave 4 (July 2012 to June 2014) and Wave 5 (July 2014 to June 2016) of the Wealth and Assets Survey (WAS). We have corrected this error in this release and all other data affected. You can see the original data in the link below. We apologise for any inconvenience. Please contact Elaine Chamberlain for more information.
