Working and workless households in the UK: January to March 2022

• Of the estimated 21.2 million households (where at least one member is aged 16 to 64 years) in the UK, 59.1% had all household members aged 16 years and over in employment during January to March 2022; this was up 1.2 percentage points compared with the same period last year.

• There was an estimated 27.4% of households with a mix of at least one working and one workless adult, down 0.7 percentage points compared with the same period last year.

• There was an estimated 13.4% of households where no member of the household was in employment, down 0.5 percentage points compared with the same period last year.

Labour Force Survey (LFS) household datasets are used for analysis of family or household characteristics. For all analysis in this bulletin, a household is defined as containing at least one person aged 16 to 64 years. This bulletin focuses on the economic status of household members, for example the number of people:

• in employment in the household

• unemployed in the household

• economically inactive in the household

All estimates in this release are not seasonally adjusted. All comparisons should be carried out on an annual basis (for example, by comparing April to June periods with other April to June periods, or October to December periods with other October to December periods). Comparisons made in the datasets associated with this release are between the latest available period, January to March 2022, and January to March 2021.

LFS and Annual Population Survey (APS) reweighting

We plan to reweight the LFS and APS datasets that include data from March 2020 using our Real Time Information (RTI) dataset. We intend to release the initial reweighted LFS estimates in the June Labour Market publication. On 23 May 2022, we published an article on the Impact of reweighting on Labour Force Survey key indicators: 2022 with indicative estimates of the impact and a more detailed reweighting timeline.

Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Our Coronavirus and the effects on UK labour market statistics article, published on 6 May 2020, provides information on how labour market data sources are affected by the coronavirus pandemic. This article details some of the challenges that we have faced in producing estimates.

LFS responses published from 15 July 2021 have been reweighted to new populations using growth rates from HM Revenue and Customs' (HMRC's) RTI, to allow for different trends during the coronavirus pandemic. Labour Market Statistics User Engagement Survey

Over the last few years, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has been developing a transformed version of the LFS using an online-first multimode collection approach. With recent developments, including the addition of the ability to respond by telephone, we are now able to begin moving towards incorporating the transformed LFS data into the regular labour market data releases.

We understand these changes may affect some of our users and we are carrying out a Labour Market Statistics User Engagement Survey, which closes 29 June 2022, to better understand those impacts.
