Provides files to download data as it existed for this dataset on previous dates.

Statistics are most often revised for 1 of 2 reasons:

  1. For certain statistics initial estimates are released with the expectation that these may be revised and updated as further data becomes available.
  2. Revisions may also be made when methods or systems are changed.

These types of planned revisions should not be confused with errors in released statistics, which are genuine mistakes. Such mistakes occur rarely and, when they do happen, corrections are made in a timely manner, announced and clearly explained to users in line with the Code of Practice for Official Statistics (Principle 2, Practice 7).

Due to a processing error some time series data in household consumption final expenditure were not updated with the latest data. In the 30 September 2021 release of Consumer Trends an error has been identified in the calculation of annual household expenditure chain volume measures for selected periods between 1985 and 1996. Quarterly figures are unaffected. Current price data are not impacted by this error. This error has now been rectified. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

ONS identified a processing error that caused Households Individual consumption expenditure (ABJQ) to be incorrect in the quarterly, current price, seasonally adjusted data for 1985 Q1 to 1986 Q4 published in the consumer trends time series dataset. A related issue was identified for Household final consumption expenditure by purpose and goods and services data for 1985 Q1 to 1996 Q4. The affected series were all current price, seasonally adjusted, quarterly data. We have corrected these errors. You can see all previous versions of this data on the previous versions page. Important notes and usage information

Since Quarter 1 (Jan to Mar) 2020, estimates of household final consumption expenditure (HHFCE), along with other components of gross domestic product (GDP), have been subject to more uncertainty than usual as a result of the challenges we faced in collecting the data under government-imposed public health restrictions. In the case of HHFCE, these challenges have been compounded by the suspension of data collection for the International Passenger Survey (IPS) between 16 March 2020 and mid-January 2021 and the temporary suspension of the Living Costs and Food Survey (LCF) between 16 March 2020 and 14 April 2020.

These datasets are published in a format that meets accessibility requirements. More details on releasing statistics in spreadsheets can be found in the Government Statistical Service (GSS) guidance..)

The quarterly consumer trends data are typically published around 90 days after the end of the calendar quarter.

This release contains data that are consistent with the UK National Accounts, the Blue Book: 2024, to be released on 31 October 2024. As such data from Quarter 1 (January to March) 2023 within this release are subject to revision in line with the  National Accounts Revisions Policy

The Blue Book is the UK's annual compendium of national accounts data and incorporates a number of improvements to methods and sources into the UK National Accounts.

The reference year and last base year for all chained volume measure estimates is 2022. Further information on latest developments and changes implemented in Blue Book 2024 can be found in the article, Proposed changes to be implemented in Blue Book and Pink Book 2024

HHFCE includes spending on goods and services except for: buying or extending a house, investment in valuables (for example, paintings and antiques), or purchasing second-hand goods. Explanations for these exceptions and the related concepts are available in the Consumer trends QMI.
