Statistics are most often revised for 1 of 2 reasons:

  1. For certain statistics initial estimates are released with the expectation that these may be revised and updated as further data becomes available.
  2. Revisions may also be made when methods or systems are changed.

These types of planned revisions should not be confused with errors in released statistics, which are genuine mistakes. Such mistakes occur rarely and, when they do happen, corrections are made in a timely manner, announced and clearly explained to users in line with the Code of Practice for Official Statistics (Principle 2, Practice 7).

Correction See correction
In a previous publication the population file included the 40 LAU1 areas of Scotland instead of the 32 Scottish Council areas, and so the population data did not match the areas used elsewhere in the dataset. An incorrect file was then uploaded; however we have now replaced this with the correct file containing the population figures with the correct areas of Scotland.

In our previous publication the population file included the 40 LAU1 areas of Scotland instead of the 32 Scottish Council areas. Hence the population data did not match the areas used elsewhere in the dataset. We have now replaced the population figures with the correct areas of Scotland.

Correction See correction
Due to a processing error, the Local Authority population estimates for England and Wales for 2012 to 2016 inclusive were not updated. No other data tables are affected. We have now corrected this. Office for National Statistics apologises for the inconvenience caused.
