Thank you for your enquiry.

We are responsible for producing birth statistics for England and Wales. Birth statistics represent births that occurred and were registered in England and Wales in the calendar year, but they include a very small number of late registrations from the previous year.

If we assume a second generation child, born in England and Wales, is one where at least one of their parents were not born in the UK we can find this information from the number of live births by country of birth of mother and father table from 2008 to 2017. This table is referred to as table 3a in our 2017 parent’s country of birth dataset, which can be found: https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/livebirths/datasets/parentscountryofbirth

For 2001 to 2007 we do not have figures available for country of birth of father. Prior to 2008 we have only published statistics based on country of birth of mother. This table is referred to as table 2 in our 2007 parents’ country of birth dataset. These figures are based on country of birth of mother so, they are not directly comparable to the figures in the 2008 to 2017 data.
