You asked

Please can you tell me how many young people aged 15 to 17 died from flu in the last 5 years.

We said

Thank you for your request.

Our mortality data come from the information collected at death registration. All the conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10). From all of these causes, an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules.

The underlying cause of death is defined by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as:

a) the disease or injury that initiated the train of events directly leading to death, or

b) the circumstances of the accident or violence that produced the fatal injury

The ICD-10 cause code for influenza is J09 - J11.

The number of deaths of people aged 15-19 in England and Wales each year are publicly available.

For the years of interest 2019 to 2022, we hold the following information on our NOMIS webservice https://www.nomisweb.co.uk.
