You asked

Could you please tell me how many deaths, where only Covid-19 is recorded as the cause of death, have been recorded in Northumberland ?

We said

Thank you for your request.

In order to provide the number of deaths registered in Northumberland specifically with COVID-19 as the only cause of death, we would be required to create bespoke analysis. Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, Public Authorities are not obligated to create information in order to respond to requests. We therefore consider this to be information not held.

However, we have been producing the following publication: Pre-existing conditions of people whose death was recorded with an underlying cause of COVID-19, deaths registered in 2020. This dataset can be found in section 7 of the Monthly mortality analysis bulletin.

This dataset provides a greater insight into the leading pre-existing cause of death groups, for deaths occurring in England and Wales in 2020 that were due to COVID-19. This will be updated quarterly. COVID-19 deaths involving pre-existing conditions is split by broad age groups between 1-64 and 65+.

Table 1a, row 28 of this publication provides the number of deaths where COVID-19 was listed as the underlying cause, but had no other pre-existing conditions recorded on the death certificate.

There were a total of 9,400 deaths in 2020 that were due to COVID-19 and were recorded without any pre-existing conditions.

Unfortunately, this dataset does not provide a breakdown by county.

You may also be interested in the following publication: Death registrations and occurrences by local authority and health board. This provides provisional counts of the number of deaths registered in England and Wales, including deaths involving the coronavirus (COVID-19), by local authority, health board and place of death. The occurrence tabs in the 2020 edition of this dataset will be updated weekly at the same time as the 2021 edition. This publication is updated every Tuesday.

Footnotes:

  1. These figures also show the number of deaths involving coronavirus (COVID-19), based on any mention of COVID-19 on the death certificate.
  2. These figures do not include deaths of those resident outside England and Wales or those records where the place of residence is either missing or not yet fully coded. For this reason counts may differ to published figures when summed.
  3. These figures represent death occurrences and registrations, there can be a delay between the date a death occurred and the date a death was registered. More information can be found in our impact of registration delays release.
  4. Figures for the latest week are based on boundaries as of November 2020.
  5. For deaths registered from 1st January 2020, cause of death is coded to the ICD-10 classification using MUSE 5.5 software. Previous years were coded to IRIS 4.2.3, further information about the change in software is available.
  6. The ONS policy on protecting confidentiality in birth and death statistics is available on our website.
