You asked

Can you tell me how many people in the UK have died from Covid-19 only. Not died after tested positive with other underlying health issues. Just died from Covid-19 only.

Thank you for your request.

We are responsible for the provision of mortality statistics for England and Wales. National Records Scotland (NRS) and the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. Therefore, we do not hold deaths solely from COVID-19 for the whole of the UK. Please email NRS and NISRA at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively to request this data for Scotland and Northern Ireland.

We report the number of deaths due to COVID-19, registered in England and Wales in 2020, by leading cause and main pre-existing condition (including where COVID-19 was the sole condition mentioned on the death certificate) in the Monthly mortality analysis, England and Wales publication and in the following dataset: Pre-existing conditions of those who died due to COVID-19. Figures for January to March 2021 will be available in the next update of this publication on 22 April 2021.

We also publish a breakdown of deaths 'due to' COVID-19 (where it was recorded as the underlying cause of death) and deaths 'involving' COVID-19 (where it was mentioned anywhere on the death certificate) in our latest provisional weekly deaths publication. The breakdown is available to download in Figure 2 of this publication.  Please be aware that deaths 'due to' COVID means it was the underlying (primary) cause, but other contributory causes could still have been mentioned in those deaths.

Deaths within 28 days of a positive test are published via the government's COVID-19 dashboard.  Figures on deaths published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) differ from those produced by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) and the UK's public health agencies for two main reasons: the time between death and reporting of the death and the ONS's wider inclusion criteria. Our blog Counting deaths involving COVID-19 helps to explain the differences.
