Deaths from influenza and pneumonia 2019 to 2020

Deaths involving influenza and pneumonia (ICD10 code J12-J18) from 2019 to 2020 in England and Wales are available via our NOMIS webservice.

COVID-19 2020 deaths

Deaths due to COVID-19 can be found in the following recent publication: Deaths due to COVID-19, registered in England and Wales - Office for National Statistics (ons.gov.uk)

There were a total of 607,922 deaths registered in England and Wales in 2020. Of these deaths 81,795 involved COVID-19 (13.5% of all deaths), of which 73,766 were due to COVID-19 (12.1% of all deaths). The first death involving COVID-19 was registered on 9 March 2020.

In this article, we use the term "due to COVID-19" when referring only to deaths with an underlying cause of death of COVID-19 and we use the term "involving COVID-19" when referring to deaths that had COVID-19 mentioned anywhere on the death certificate, whether as the underlying cause or not.

Burials and cremations

We hold mortality statistics in England and Wales based on the information supplied when a death is registered.

Unfortunately, we do not hold information about burial or cremation, as this is not supplied during the registration of a death.

Cremation statistics are available online from the cremation society of Great Britain: https://www.cremation.org.uk/statistics
