Q1, 2, 3, and 6: The population of Bournville in 2021/2020 and 2000/2001 by age and sex

The ONS provides statistics based on local authorities and geographies such as wards and output areas that comprise them. We don't hold specific population statistics about the area of the Birmingham local authority you refer to as Bournville. However, to get the data you require the best way is to access our statistics via the Nomis website where you can tailor your enquiry to meet your specific needs as closely as possible.

For 2001 data

  • Go to the 'data downloads' section and click on 'query data'
  • Click on Census 2001

Our NOMIS webservice will be updated with the above information for 2021 in 2022.

Q4: Percentage of people in Bournville registered in a legal marriage or civil partnership in 2021/2020 and 2000/2001

Unfortunately, we are unable to provide data for 2000/2001 data for Civil Partnerships as the first Same Sex Civil Partnership took place on 21 December 2005 and the same opposite sex partnership was 31 December 2019.

We do hold the following analysis for Civil Partnerships, Civil partnerships in England and Wales - Office for National Statistics (ons.gov.uk), which provides 2020 data. Table 8a provides data by the metropolitan authority of Birmingham. There were 6 same sex Civil Partnerships and 55 opposite sex Civil partnerships in 2020.

However, unfortunately, we do not hold this data at the requested lower geography.

2021 data is not yet available as we have not received this from the General Registry Office. 2021 data is provisionally scheduled to be published in August/September 2022.

Unfortunately, we do not hold data on the percentage of the population in Bournville who were registered in a legal marriage. However, we can provide data for marriages registered in the Birmingham area in 2001.

Marriages for 2001 from our NOMIS webservice for Birmingham, there were 3439 marriages registered in this area in 2001.

If it is of interest, we could create a bespoke output showing marriages at local authority level. Information on marriages by local authority level for 2000 and 2001 along with other special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate). Such enquiries would fall outside of the Freedom of Information regime and can be made to: Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.

To note, we do not hold legal marriage data for 2020/2021. Marriage data is published two years in arrears, so the next publication will be 2019 data which will be published in March/April of 2022.The recording of religious marriages is still paper-based and therefore they take longer to reach us. There are several stages involved: paper records from churches are sent to the local registration service; this information is then forwarded to the General Register Office, who manually key in details of each paper record; and then the data are sent to us. Delays can also be due to closure of churches and changes in the clergy. We wait 2 years to receive as many religious marriage registration records as possible to balance timeliness against completeness of the data.

Q5: Divorce rate in Bournville

The latest Divorce data available is Divorces in England and Wales - Office for National Statistics (ons.gov.uk) with data for 2019. 2020 data will be available October/November 2022. Table 1 holds national level data from 1858 to 2019.

Unfortunately, we do not hold divorce statistics by area of residence because the divorce data provided to us by the courts does not contain information on the area of residence of the parties.

Since 2018, Family Court Statistics Quarterly, published by the Ministry of Justice (MoJ), has included a CSV file containing the petitioner's local authority of usual residence. Information on the location of the court is also available from Family Court Statistics Quarterly. However, court location does not accurately reflect where parties lived either before or after separation; divorce courts were also centralised in 2015 to 11 main divorce centres throughout England and Wales.

Q7: Employment rates in Bournville in 2021/2020 and 2000/2001

We estimate the employment rate for local areas using the Annual Population Survey, a survey based on interviews with members of households across the UK.

Although we use APS for local areas, we do not hold estimates for anything as granular as wards, such as Bournville from the survey. Alternatively, we can provide estimates for the local authority of Birmingham or the Selly Oak Parliamentary Constituency. The APS is a continuous survey that started in 2004.

Please see the accompanying download named 'Employment rates for Birmingham or the Selly Oak Parliamentary Constituency 2004 to 2021.xlsx'. These are estimates for Birmingham and Selly Oak from January to December 2004 until July 2020 to June 2021, the latest period available.

For more detailed geographic areas, such as Bournville ward we would use Census information.

  • According to the 2011 Census the employment rate for the Bournville ward (E36006769) was 71.1%
  • However, results from the 2001 Census are not available on a comparable basis, but the equivalent rate was between 67.8 and 70.5%.

Results from the 2021 Census will be available next year. As such, information for 2021 is considered exempt under Section 22(1) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000, whereby information is exempt from release if there is a view to publish the information in the future. Furthermore, as a central government department and producer of official statistics, we need to have the freedom to be able to determine our own publication timetables. This is to allow us to deal with the necessary preparation, administration and context of publications. It would be unreasonable to consider disclosure when to do so would undermine our functions.

This exemption is subject to a public interest test. We recognise the desirability of information being freely available and this is considered by ONS when publication schedules are set in accordance with the Code of Practice for Statistics. The need for timely data must be balanced against the practicalities of applying statistical skill and judgement to produce the high quality, assured data needed to inform decision-making. If this balance is incorrectly applied, then we run the risk of decisions being based on inaccurate data which is arguably not in the public interest. This will have an impact on public trust in official statistics in a time when accuracy of official statistics is more important to the public than ever before.

Q8 and Q9: Population school children or students in full time education in Bournville in 2021/2020 and 2000/2001

Our best and most up-to-date, official estimates of the population of Bournville by education remain those derived from the 2011 census.

Q10: Crime rate in Bournville 2000/2001 and 2020/2021

Unfortunately, we do not hold the data you require for Bournville from the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW). To answer your request, we would need to create an ad hoc analysis. Under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) 2000, public authorities are not obligated to create information in response to requests. This information is therefore not held. To note, we have not published this information previously as the sample sizes within the CSEW at ward level are not robust enough to provide reliable estimates.

Therefore, the Home Office may be better placed to provide data for Bournville using police recorded crime for the area. They can be contacted at CrimeandPoliceStats@homeoffice.gov.uk.

A resource that may be helpful in the meantime is the 'Your area' section of the Police.uk website. Monthly police recorded crime for Bournville going back 3 years is available at the following link: https://www.police.uk/pu/your-area/west-midlands-police/bournville/?tab=Statistics.

Q11: COVID-19 death rate in Bournville

Unfortunately, we do are unable to disclose mortality data by specific cause and ward geography level, due to the small numbers involved, as this would be disclosive. This is consistent with the disclosure control methodology used for deaths. Section 39 of the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007 (SRSA) which renders it an offence to disclose information held by the Statistics Board for statistical purposes that would identify an individual or a body corporate. As we are prohibited by law from publishing statistics in which individual businesses or persons can be identified, we find that Section 44 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) applies. Section 44 is an absolute exemption and no consideration of the public interest test needs to be applied.

However, we do publish by the number of deaths registered by Metropolitan authority level in this analysis Death registrations and occurrences by local authority and health board.

COVID-19 Death registrations (numbers) by local authority and cause of death, registered from 2nd January 2021 up to the 3rd December 2021, England and Wales

COVID-19 Death registrations (numbers) by local authority and cause of death, registered up to the 1st January 2021, England and Wales

Information on crude death rate by specific cause for Birmingham or by MSOA level, along with other special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order as bespoke analysis, should this be of interest. Please note our bespoke services are subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate.

Such enquiries would fall outside of the Freedom of Information regime and should be made to: Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.

Q12: Number of people in Bournville who have been double vaccinated

You can find the official vaccination estimates for local areas by visiting the UK Health Security Agency's (UKHSA, formerly public health England) coronavirus dashboard and using the 'search by postcode' function. For more information on official vaccination estimates, you can contact UKHSA via email at informationrights@ukhsa.gov.uk.

The COVID-19 Infection Survey (CIS) is a household survey that estimates the number of people testing positive for infection and for antibodies in the UK. Our statistics refer to the number of current COVID-19 infections within the population living in private residential households. We exclude those in hospitals, care homes and/or other communal establishments. In communal establishments, rates of COVID-19 infection are likely to be different.

In the dataset accompanying our latest Coronavirus (COVID-19) Infection Survey, antibody and vaccination data bulletin you can find the modelled percentage of the adult population vaccinated by region in England on tab 1f. Bournville would be captured under the West Midlands. Unfortunately, we do not hold data on vaccination at the geographical level of Bournville. Please note that these are modelled estimates of the percentage of the adult population that have been double vaccinated based on the CIS sample and are not to be confused with the official estimates.

Q13: Population of Bournville have contracted COVID during the last 18 months

You can find data on infections in your local area on the UKHSA's coronavirus dashboard by using the 'search by postcode' function. You can also find the modelled percentage of the population testing positive for COVID-19 by CIS subregion on tab 1m of the England dataset accompanying our Coronavirus (COVID-19) Infection Survey bulletin.

Bournville is in the Birmingham subregion. These figures over the last 18 months can be found in previous editions of the dataset.

Unfortunately, we do not hold data on the percentage of the population testing positive for COVID-19 at the geographical level of Bournville.

Further information and an overview of data about the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic from the Office for National Statistic (ONS) and other sources can be found in our Coronavirus (COVID-19) latest insights tool.

Q14: Life expectancy of the population of Bournville in 2020/2021 and 2000/2001

The latest publication we have on life expectancy by local area is Life expectancy for local areas of the UK.

Figures are not calculated for lower-level geographies such as villages due to small numbers of deaths and populations as this would be disclosive. Section 39 of the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007 (SRSA) renders it an offence to disclose information held by the Statistics Board for statistical purposes that would identify an individual or a body corporate. As we are prohibited by law from publishing statistics in which individual businesses or persons can be identified, we find that Section 44 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) applies. Section 44 is an absolute exemption and no consideration of the public interest test needs to be applied.

However, we are able to provide this information for Birmingham. Please see the following tables:

Female life expectancy by age in Birmingham, 2001-2003 to 2018-2020

Male life expectancy by age in Birmingham, 2001-2003 to 2018-2020

Notes:

  1. Figures are based on the number of deaths registered and mid-year population estimates, aggregated over 3 consecutive years
  2. Figures for England, Wales, regions, counties, and local authorities exclude deaths of non-residents
  3. Significant changes in the bulletin between 2015 to 2017 and 2018 to 2020 are based on unrounded non-overlapping confidence intervals
  4. Local areas for England are local authorities
