Thank you for your enquiry.

Deaths

We are responsible for the production of Mortality data for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

As part of a collaboration, we do publish headline figures for the UK and constituent countries in our Vital Statistics in the UK publication. As we receive the data from NRS and NISRA we are unable to provide age and sex disaggregation.

The Deaths Registered in England and Wales series will provide total yearly deaths by broad age group, sex and leading causes for deaths registered in England and Wales.

Our 21st Century Mortality publication provides annual data on the number of deaths registered in England and Wales by age group, sex, year and underlying cause of death, as defined using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision from 2001 to 2020.

A full ICD-10 breakdown of deaths for 2021 is not yet available, this is provisionally scheduled to be published in July 2022. This is to allow the inclusion of late registrations, which are deaths that have been referred for coroner input.

If this does not meet your needs, we can create a custom output. Special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate).

Such enquiries should be made to: Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.

Population

UK population numbers by age and sex can be found in our Mid-year estimates. The Mid-2020 edition of this dataset provides the population estimates by age and sex, in the tab "MYE2-Persons" you will be able to find population estimates by "Persons by single year of age and sex for local authorities in the UK, mid-2020".

The years prior to 2020 can be found underneath the mid-2020 estimates.
