We said

Thank you for your enquiry,

We are responsible for the production of mortality data for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration.

We receive headline data from our colleagues at National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) to produce total UK mortality rates. This information is published annually in the following publication: Vital statistics in the UK: births, deaths and marriages. The latest data available is for 2020.

In the "Deaths" tab, you will find count of deaths, crude mortality rate and age standardised mortality rate for the UK and constituent countries from 1981 to 2020

We are provisionally scheduled to publish 2021 data in February 2023, the final publication date will be announced on our Release calendar.

National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for the statistics in this publication pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. If you have any questions about this data or would like to obtain data for these countries for 2021 and 2022, NRS and NISRA can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

England and Wales data

We hold the following analysis, Deaths registered in England and Wales, which provides registered deaths by age, sex, selected underlying causes of death and rates. Count of deaths is available from 1838, with crude mortality rate available from 1953 and Age Standardised Mortality Rate (ASMR) from 1994.

As data for 2022 is not yet complete, we publish provisional monthly rates in our Monthly mortality analysis, England and Wales publication. The latest data available is October 2022, with November data scheduled for release on 23 December 2022.

This data remains provisional to allow the inclusion of late registrations, which are deaths which are referred for Coroner investigation. Non provisional data will be published the updated Deaths Registered Series in July 2023.
