You asked

I am seeking information relating to Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs).

Specifically, I am interested in obtaining the latest data on businesses categorized by employment sizes within the following Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes: 25110, 25290, 25500, 25610, 25620, 25990, 28410, and 24330.

Additionally, I would appreciate this information categorized by region, enabling me to analyze the distribution of businesses within these SIC groups and size bands across different regions.

After conducting a thorough search of your data, I came across Table 4 (below link), which provides relevant information. However, it lacks regional breakdowns, particularly regarding which SIC groups and business sizes correspond to each region.

Thank you for your Freedom of Information requesting Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SME’s) by specific Standard Industrial Classification (SIC’s).

The Inter-Departmental Business Register (IDBR) holds all businesses registered for VAT and/or PAYE. ONS produce an annual publication called UK Business: Activity, size and location. This publication breaks down the number of UK Businesses (registered for VAT and/or PAYE)  by geography, employment size-band, industry and legal status.

NOMIS web allows users to break down our UK Business data by various means. These data can be found under the UK Business Counts option. The following counts for SME’s by specific size-band, regions etc can be found using the above link. Data are available between 2010 and 2023.

Through the ONS Data Analysis Service (see website link below), we can provide non-disclosive counts of businesses which can include aggregated variables such as employment/employees and turnover values for the corresponding business counts.
