FOI REF: FOI-2023-1271

You asked

I would like to know how the religions population groups have changed since the last census.

We said

Thank you for your request.

Information on responses to the "What is your religion" question on the 2011 and 2021 Censuses is available via the following link: Religion in England and Wales.

Comparisons may be made between the two censuses as the question did not change. The only difference was in the labelling of the Christian category in the response options – from "Christian (including Church of England, Catholic, Protestant and all other Christian denominations" to "Christian (all denominations)".

However, when making comparisons we advise that there are many factors that can cause changes to the religious profile of a country or area. For example, differing patterns of ageing or of moving to or from an area/country for work or education. Changes may also be caused by differences in the way individuals choose to self-identify between censuses.
