FOI REF: FOI-2023-1321

You asked

I am interested in employment figures within the arts and creative industries. An article in The Stage magazine quoted ONS and stated that there had been a 44% drop in BME female arts workers. Please can you direct me to the ONS statistics it references? Are there any more up to date figures on black and minority ethnic female employees in the arts?

We said

Thank you for your request.

The estimates quoted in the thestage.com article are likely to come from independent analysis of ONS data, as these estimates were not published by us.

However, we do publish estimates of employment by industry and ethnicity. These are available from data collected from the Annual Population Survey (APS) and published via Nomis each quarter on a rolling-annual basis.

To download data from Nomis, please use the following instructions:

  • Open NOMIS webservice via the following link: Nomis

  • From the homepage, select “Data Sources”

  • Select “Annual Population Survey/Labour Force Survey”

  • For data from 2021 onwards, select “annual population survey – regional – ethnicity by industry

  • Then you can select the ethnicities and industries of interest (arts and creative industries fall under R, S, T, U & Other), the geography (country or region), and the time periods of interest.

  • Select download data

If you wish to obtain any further breakdowns beyond those available via Nomis, such as a more detailed industry breakdown, you can request an ad-hoc analysis to be produced by contacting our social surveys team (socialsurveys@ons.gov.uk).
