Thank you for your request.

We are responsible for the production of mortality data for England and Wales. This is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration.

Please see the following publication, which provides totals COVID-19, pneumonia, and influenza deaths from January to August 2020: Deaths due to coronavirus (COVID-19) compared with deaths from influenza and pneumonia. This publication states that of all death occurrences between January and August 2020, there were 394 deaths due to influenza.

Provisional mortality data for 2020 are only released via our weekly and monthly mortality analysis publications under special measures with a provisional caveat. Given the current situation with the COVID-19 pandemic, we have increased our output of provisional data to aid specialist modelling work and to provide further information alongside our weekly deaths publication. However, we have not undertaken the specific analysis for months January to July as requested. In order to fulfil this request, we would need to create a bespoke analysis. Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, Public Authorities are not obligated to create information in order to respond to requests. We therefore consider this to be information not held.

We unfortunately do not hold analysis for the years 2017 to 2019, but we may be able to produce this for you as a bespoke request. Such services would be subject to legal frameworks, disclosure controls, resources and agreement of costs. I would you like to request this as a bespoke dataset, please contact the following email address so that we may discuss your requirements further: health.data@ons.gov.uk. Please see the following link for information about our charging policy.

We also have annual data available by cause for the years 2013-2019. This is available as part of our explorable dataset available on our NOMIS webservice, accessible via the following link: NOMIS webservice. Influenza is coded under J09-J11.
