Thank you for your request.

We are responsible for the provision of mortality statistics for England and Wales. National Records Scotland (NRS) and the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

Annual numbers of deaths, crude and age-standardised mortality rates for deaths registered in England and Wales, 1938 to 2019 (final) and 2020 (provisional) are available here:

Annual deaths and mortality rates, 1938 to 2020 (provisional).  Crude rates are available from 1938 onwards and age-standardised rates are available from 1942 onwards.

Annual age-standardised mortality rates for 1994 to 2019 for England and Wales are also published in our Deaths Registered Series.

Monthly age-standardised mortality rates for 2020, based on provisional data, are currently published in our monthly mortality analysis publication, this includes a back series to 2001.

Unfortunately, we do not hold monthly age-standardised mortality rates for 1980 to 2000 for England and Wales.  In order to provide this, we would need to create bespoke analysis. Special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs). If you would to discuss the provision of this bespoke dataset, please contact: Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.
