We said

Thank you for your enquiry.

We are responsible for the provision of mortality statistics for England and Wales. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

We hold annual mortality rates in an ad hoc dataset that was published on 12 January 2021: Annual deaths and mortality rates, 1938 to 2020 (provisional). This dataset provides annual number of deaths and crude mortality rates (per 100,000 population) from 2010-2020 in England and Wales:

ONS have published mortality statistics for England and Wales in the 'Weekly figures 2021' tab of our weekly deaths dataset. There were 577,422 all cause deaths registered up to week 51 of 2021.

Influenza mortality

ONS have produced a back series as part of our 21st century mortality, which contains all-cause mortality data by ICD code, age and sex, 2001-2020, England and Wales.

The ICD codes used to code Influenza are J09-J11. You can filter on these codes in column A.

Alternatively, this information is also available as part of our explorable dataset available on our NOMIS webservice between 2013-2020.

  • Select the geography (England and Wales, regional or by local authority).
  • Select Age – All ages or 5-year age bands.
  • Select Gender – Total or Male/Female
  • Select rates – All deaths, rates or percentage of population for example.
  • Select cause of death (ICD10 code search is available).
  • Select format (Excel or CSV for example)

We have extracted these figures for you from NOMIS. Please see the attached Influenza 2013 to 2020 spreadsheet (280.5 kB xlsx).

We do not hold analysis for influenza figures in 2021. We can produce this for you as a bespoke request. Special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate).

Such enquiries would fall outside of the Freedom of Information regime and should be made to: Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.
