Thank you for your request.

The Office for National Statistics COVID-19 Infection Survey (CIS) is a household survey that estimates the number of people testing positive for infection and for antibodies in the UK. Our statistics refer to the number of current COVID-19 infections within the population living in private residential households. We exclude those in hospitals, care homes and/or other communal establishments. In communal establishments, rates of COVID-19 infection are likely to be different.

The information you have requested regarding raw numbers of infections by vaccination status and age is available from the UKHSA (UK Health Security Agency, previously Public Health England) COVID-19 surveillance reports. The relevant information is on page 40, Table 10 (17 February 2022, week 7 report). Corresponding rates of infection per 100,000 can be found on page 43, Table 13. Data for earlier time periods can be found in the back series of reports at the same link.

Please pay attention to the notes accompanying the figures. In the context of very high vaccine coverage in the population, even with a highly effective vaccine, it is expected that a large proportion of cases, hospitalisations and deaths would occur in vaccinated individuals, simply because a larger proportion of the population are vaccinated than unvaccinated and no vaccine is 100% effective. For more information, you can contact UKHSA via email at informationrights@ukhsa.gov.uk.

You can find our estimates for the percentage of the population testing positive for COVID-19 by age in the datasets accompanying our Coronavirus (COVID-19) Infection Survey  bulletins. For England, estimates by grouped age/school year can be found in tab 1h. For WalesNorthern Ireland and Scotland, estimates by single year of age can be found in tab 1e. Please note, these estimates for percentages testing positive by age are based on the sample in our survey.

You may also be interested in in the Office for National Statistics COVID-19 Infection Survey technical article on the impact of vaccination on testing positive and accompanying dataset, which includes the risk ratios of testing positive by vaccine exposure from 1 December 2020 to 14 August 2021.   Please note we intend to update our analysis on the impact of vaccination on testing positive. Details will be listed on the ONS release calendar when plans are finalised.
