You asked

How many people in England have been recorded as dying from Influenza by month from September 2019 to the most recent date you have available in 2020?

We said

Thank you for your enquiry.

Please see the following downloadable dataset, which can be located underneath Figure 2 of the following publication: Deaths registered weekly in England and Wales, provisional. This provides a weekly breakdown of deaths both due to and involving influenza and pneumonia combined.

In order to provide a monthly breakdown of deaths from influenza only, we would need to create bespoke analysis. Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, Public Authorities are not obligated to create information in order to respond to requests. We therefore consider this to be information not held.

Annual figures for deaths from influenza in 2019 can be accessed through our explorable dataset available on our NOMIS webservice, accessible via the following link: NOMIS webservice. Influenza is coded under J09-J11.

  • Select the geography (England and Wales, regional or by local authority).

  • Select Age – All ages or 5-year age bands.

  • Select Gender – Total or Male/Female

  • Select rates – All deaths, rates or percentage of population for example.

  • Select cause of death (ICD10 code search is available). J09-J11

  • Select format (Excel or CSV for example)

However, unfortunately, this does not provide a monthly breakdown of influenza deaths. In order to provide this, we would need to create bespoke analysis. We may be able to create this as ad hoc analysis. Information on monthly deaths by specific cause for 2019, along with other special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate). Such enquiries would fall outside of the Freedom of Information regime and should be made to: Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.
