Exposure to COVID-19 by occupation

Our most recent analysis regarding potential COVID-19 exposure by occupation is available via the following link: Which occupations have the highest potential exposure to the coronavirus (COVID-19)? This provides an estimate of the exposure to generic disease, and the physical proximity to others, for UK occupations based on US analysis of these factors.

We also produced a blog, which brings together exposure and mortality findings, which is accessible via the following link: Understanding the impact of coronavirus on the workforce.

We have also produced an ad hoc piece of analysis showing COVID-19 exposure by industry rather than occupation. This is available via the following link: Industry by physical proximity to others in the UK, 2019. This provides information on the industry by physical proximity to others in the UK 2019 using the Annual Population Survey (APS).

Positive tests for COVID-19 by occupation

Please see the following analysis showing COVID-19 positivity by occupation:

This analysis is for England only and covers various time periods from 26 April 2020 when the COVID-19 Infection Survey started.

The COVID-19 Schools Infection Survey Round 1 provides initial estimates of staff and pupils testing positive for COVID-19 across a sample of schools, within high and low prevalence local authority areas in England from 03 November to 19 November 2020. In the dataset accompanying the latest publication, tabs 1a and 1b show the reported estimates of percentage of pupils and staff testing positive for COVID-19, for staff and pupils in primary school and secondary school.

Hospitalisation for COVID-19 by occupation

The data we hold on COVID-19 hospitalisations in the following bulletin, COVID-19 weekly insights: Latest health indicators in England, are data that we receive from Public Health England (PHE). We do not hold raw data for hospitalisation and therefore do not hold the information you have requested.

Public Health England would be better placed to assist with your query. They can be contacted via email at wn_coronavirus@phe.gov.uk.

Death linked to COVID-19 by occupation

Our latest analysis showing COVID-19 deaths by occupation is available via the following link: COVID-19 deaths by occupation in England and Wales: March to December 2020. Please also see the dataset accompanying this bulletin.
