FOI/2022/4557

You asked

Since the start of the Covid Pandemic how many Deaths have been recorded within the area of Caerphilly County Borough Council, where Covid has been registered as a factor on the Death Certificate.

We said

Thank you for your request.

We hold the following analysis for 2020 and 2021 Deaths due to COVID-19, registered in England and Wales - Office for National Statistics (ons.gov.uk) Table 6 and 6a shows data for Welsh local authorities.

We use the term "due to COVID-19" when referring only to deaths with an underlying cause of death as COVID-19 and we use the term "involving COVID-19" when referring to deaths that had COVID-19 mentioned anywhere on the death certificate, whether as an underlying cause or not.

Information on cause of death coding is available in the User Guide to Mortality Statistics: User guide to mortality statistics.

Figures are based on area of usual residence. Figures for England and Wales (combined) include deaths of non-residents. However, all other geographical breakdowns exclude deaths of non-residents and are based on the most up-to-date information available at the time of publication.

  • In 2020, there were 267 deaths due to COVID-19 registered in Caerphilly
  • In 2021 there were 215 deaths due to COVID-19 registered in Caerphilly

For 2022, we publish COVID-19 deaths weekly by local authority as part of our Death registrations and occurrences by local authority and health board - Office for National Statistics. Please note this data is still provisional and subject to change. This is to allow the inclusion of late registrations which are deaths that have been referred for Coroner Investigation.
