We are responsible for the production of Mortality data for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

Our Deaths registered monthly in England and Wales will provide number of deaths registered each month by area of usual residence for England and Wales, by region, county, local and unitary authority, and London borough. These are monthly provisional data covering the month before release and do not include the most up-to-date figures on deaths registered involving the coronavirus (COVID-19); see our weekly deaths data, monthly deaths from 2006 to 2021.

  1. This may include records where the place of usual residence is either missing or not yet fully coded. For this reason, counts for ''England and Wales'' and ''non-residents of England and Wales'' may not sum to ''England, Wales and elsewhere''.
  2. The deaths of those whose usual residence is outside England and Wales are included in counts for 'England Wales and elsewhere' but excluded from any sub-division of England and Wales.
  3. Figures remain provisional until final annual data are released.
  4. In April 2020, some local authorities were combined. This published data represents the current Local Authorities. Figures for the latest month are based on boundaries as of November 2020.
