Total deaths covering January 2000 to date

Please provide, preferably by excel spreadsheet, data for England and Wales, to date detailing for the period from January 2000 to the latest month available at point of answering this request:

  1. total deaths registered each month
  2. total deaths each month broken by age
  3. total deaths each month by main cause of death

If for any reason the period of 20+ years requested causes difficulty, please explain why and provide the most recent data going back for the longest period that you can.

Thank you for your enquiry.

Unfortunately, we would be unable to provide you with Monthly Deaths by cause and age from 2000 -- 2020.  To fulfil this request, we would need to create a bespoke analysis or table. Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, Public Authorities are not obligated to create information in order to respond to requests. We therefore consider this to be information not held.

Our Deaths registered monthly publication is available from 2006 to 2020.

However, we do have the following ad-hoc user-requested data sets available:

Monthly deaths, England and Wales, deaths that occurred between 2001 and 2018: This provides monthly deaths by sex and single year of age.

Deaths registered by month, age and sex, 2002 to 2012: This provides monthly deaths by age and sex.

With regards to your request for monthly deaths by cause, deaths by leading cause and age is available for 2020 in the following publication: Monthly Mortality Analysis.

We also have the following user requested data sets available:

Number of deaths from selected underlying causes, by month and year of death registration and place of death, England and Wales, deaths registered 2008 to 2016

Deaths by leading causes groupings by month of occurrence, England, 2015 to 2019

If this does not meet your needs, we may be able to create a custom output. Information on monthly deaths from 2019 to 2000, along with other special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate).
