You asked

I was looking for cervical cancer data from the year 2000 on your website and I could not find it.

Is it on the website or does it have to be requested separately?

Cervical cancer death registrations

Our mortality data comes from the information collected at death registration. All the conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10). From all of these causes an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules.

The underlying cause of death is defined by WHO as:

a) the disease or injury that initiated the train of events directly leading to death, or\ b) the circumstances of the accident or violence that produced the fatal injury

The ICD-10 cause codes for cervical cancer are:

  • C53 Malignant neoplasm of cervix uteri
  • C53.0 Malignant neoplasm: Endocervix
  • C53.1 Malignant neoplasm: Exocervix
  • C53.8 Malignant neoplasm: Overlapping lesion of cervix uteri
  • C53.9 Malignant neoplasm: Cervix uteri, unspecified

Information from 2013 to 2021 is available on our NOMIS webservice. Please see the associated download extracted from this service containing the data for the above ICD-10 codes by Total Mortality (England, Wales and non -residents) for 2013-2021.

For 2000 to 2012, this information is available in our 21st Century Mortality publication. This publication annual data on the number of deaths registered in England and Wales by age group, sex, year, and underlying cause of death, as defined using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision.

Should you wish any further analysis on deaths involving cervical cancer, we can create a bespoke tabulation. This service is subject to disclosure control, legal frameworks, resources and agreement to costs under the ONS Charging policy.
