You asked

Please can you provide me with the number of deaths and injuries attributed to the COVID-19 vaccines since 2022 - present in the UK.

We said

Thank you for your enquiry,

We are responsible for the production of Mortality data for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively

Deaths which include adverse reaction to the COVID-19 vaccination

Deaths which include adverse reaction to the COVID-19 vaccination as either the underlying cause or contributory mention are recorded in table 12 as part of our Monthly Mortality Analysis. The latest data available is October 2022.

As of October, there have been 55 deaths attributed to adverse reaction to the COVID-19 vaccination, of which 47 have this as the underlying cause of death in England. In Wales there is 1 registered death with adverse reaction as the underlying cause of death.

Deaths by COVID-19 vaccination status

We also hold the following analysis Deaths by vaccination status, England which provides Age-standardised mortality rates for deaths involving coronavirus (COVID-19), non-COVID-19 deaths and all deaths by vaccination status, broken down by age group. Please note these are deaths where the deceased has received the COVID-19 vaccination, but it has not been attributed as a cause of death.

The data are for England only, as vaccinations data for Wales is not yet available to be linked to the mortality dataset and the PHDA covers England only.  Therefore, we consider data for Wales as information not held.

There will be a delay in publishing the next edition of the deaths by vaccination status dataset as we require data on subsequent booster vaccinations and will be updating to the 2021 Census populations. The next publication date will be announced on our Release Calendar.

Injuries caused by the COVID-19 vaccination

ONS do not hold data regarding adverse reactions to the COVID-19 vaccination that do not result in death.

The Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Authority's (MHRA) role is to continually monitor the safety of any medicine or vaccine once they are approved for use. Yellow Card is a website where any member of the public or health professional can report any suspected side effect. This includes deaths, which are reported by others on behalf of the deceased person. As the information is self-reported, it means that the suspected side effects are not always proven and some of the side effects may have occurred regardless of the vaccine. MHRA are better placed to answer your enquiry, as they are responsible for the Yellow Card Scheme. They can be contacted using this form or by email on info@mhra.gov.uk.
