I would like to know how many people died of influenza in (NG16 3FR postcode area) for the year of 2018.

We said

ONS mortality data comes from the information collected at death registration. All of the conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10). From all of these causes an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules. The underlying cause of death is defined by WHO as:

a) the disease or injury that initiated the train of events directly leading to death, or

b) the circumstances of the accident or violence that produced the fatal injury

The annual number of deaths where influenza was the underlying cause, for England and Wales, can be obtained via NOMIS for 2013 to 2019. Influenza can be identified using ICD-10 codes J09-J11.

The postcode area of NG16 3FR falls within Broxtowe 001 MSOA area (MSOA code E02005850).

NOMIS shows that there were no deaths registered with an underlying cause of influenza, for Broxtowe 001 MSOA area, for the period 2013 to 2019. However, there are two important things to note about this:

  1. Figures in NOMIS are rounded to protect the confidentiality of individuals.  Small counts output for areas below region level are rounded as follows: counts of 0, 1, and 2 are rounded to 0, while counts of 3, 4, and 5 are rounded to 5.

  2. NOMIS only presents numbers of deaths by underlying cause.  It is possible that there were deaths registered in this area where influenza was mentioned as a contributory cause of death, but this information is not available via NOMIS (or in any of our regular publications).

We may be able to provide you with the number of deaths where influenza was mentioned either as the underlying cause or as a contributory factor, for deaths registered in the Broxtowe 001 MSOA area, as a bespoke analysis. Such services would fall outside of the Freedom of Information regime and would be subject to legal frameworks, disclosure controls, resources and agreement of costs. If you would like to request this bespoke dataset, please contact health.data@ons.gov.uk to discuss your enquiry further. Please note, there may be a charge for this work which would be subject to our charging policy.
