Thank you for your request.

The mortality data published by ONS are derived from the formal process of death registration. We are responsible for mortality data for England and Wales. Therefore, we do not hold the requested statistics for the whole of the UK. For Scotland and Northern Ireland statistics please contact National Records Scotland and NISRA respectively.

Deaths from COVID-19 may include cases where the doctor completing the death certificate diagnosed possible cases of COVID-19, for example, where this was based on relevant symptoms but no test for the virus was conducted. Deaths with a positive test are coded using the ICD10 code U0.71 and those with suspected COVID-19 but no test has been conducted are coded with ICD10 U0.72.

1. The total number of deaths in the England and Wales (to date) from COVID-19 among people who are under the age of 40 with no underlying medical condition.

We have been producing the following dataset: Pre-existing conditions of people whose death was recorded with an underlying cause of COVID-19. This dataset can be found in section 8 of the Monthly mortality analysis bulletin. This dataset provides a greater insight into the leading pre-existing cause of death groups, for deaths occurring in England and Wales, in 2020 and the first quarter of 2021 that were due to COVID-19.

Please see 'table 1a, row 28 (2020) and row 29 (2021)' for deaths where COVID-19 was listed as the underlying cause, but had no other pre-existing conditions recorded on the death certificate, England and Wales. Table 1b represents these figures for England and table 1c figures are for Wales.

This publication will be updated quarterly. COVID-19 deaths involving pre-existing conditions is split by broad age groups between 1-64 and 65+. For those aged between 1-64, there was a total of 1549 deaths in England and Wales 2020 and 1560 deaths registered in quarter 1 of 2021 that were due to COVID-19 and were recorded without any pre-existing conditions.

Unfortunately, we do not hold this analysis for those aged under 40 in England and Wales.

2. The total number of hospital admissions in the UK (to date) for COVID-19 among people who are under the age of 40 with no underlying medical condition.

Unfortunately, we do not hold data on hospital admissions. You may be able to obtain this information from NHS Digital. They can be contacted via email at enquiries@nhsdigital.nhs.uk.

3. The total number of deaths in England and Wales (this year) where a COVID-19 vaccination has been listed as a possible cause on the death certificate.

As stated above, we are responsible for the production of mortality data for England and Wales. You can find the number of deaths involving COVID-19 (not restricted to first or second vaccination) in table 12 of our Monthly Mortality Analysis dataset, these include figures for deaths involving adverse reactions to the COVID-19 vaccination. There are currently 2 deaths registered with the aligning ICD codes for this. However, should this change, they will be updated in this table. This publication is due to be updated in June 2021.

4. The total number of deaths in England and Wales between January and May (inclusive) for the years: 2019, 2020, 2021.

We produce the following publication: Deaths registered monthly in England and Wales. This includes a monthly breakdown of deaths by all causes and area of usual residence. This data is available from 2006 to April 2021 (provisional). The next update is scheduled for release on 18 June 2021 which will include the May figures.

5.  The total number of deaths in England and Wales from COVID-19 between January and May (inclusive) for the years: 2020, 2021.

We have also been publishing a breakdown of COVID-19 deaths in our weekly deaths bulletin with statistics published up to week ending May 2021. Please download the 'Covid-19 -- Weekly registrations' table in the 2020 and 2021 datasets for weekly deaths. These figures can be used to give you a total for the periods you have requested. Table 12 of our Monthly Mortality Analysis dataset does contain monthly figures for COVID-19 deaths. This dataset was created in response to the pandemic, unfortunately this only extends as far back as July 2020.

If you would like to discuss these statistics further, please contact health.data@ons.gov.uk.
