FOI/2021/2633

You asked

I would like to request the most up to date figures of deaths & adverse reactions after 30 days of receiving any & all recognised Covid-19 vaccinations from the beginning of the vaccination rollout and end with the latest figures.

I would like deaths & adverse reactions listed separately.

I would like to know if information is collated at all from the UK yellow card reporting system.

We said

Thank you for your enquiry.

We are responsible for the production of mortality data for England and Wales, driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

Our mortality data is taken from the death certificate at the point of death registration. MHRA Yellow Card reporting data is based on notifications. Therefore, the Yellow Card data will be different to ONS data. Unfortunately, we do not hold data on adverse reactions to the COVID-19 vaccination. You can find these figures for the period December 2020 to June 2021, published by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), here.

Deaths involving the COVID-19 vaccination

You can find the number of deaths involving COVID-19 (not restricted to first or second vaccination) in table 12 of our Monthly Mortality Analysis dataset, these include figures for deaths involving adverse reactions to the COVID-19 vaccination. There are currently 4 deaths registered with the aligning ICD-10 codes for this (U12.9). The latest data available is June 2021.

However, should this change, they will be updated in this table. This publication is due to be updated in August 2021.

Deaths within a period of time of receiving the COVID-19 vaccination

Please note, we do not hold analysis showing deaths occurring specifically within 30 days of receiving the COVID-19 vaccination. However, we are currently working on analysis on all aspects of the relationship between COVID-19 vaccination and mortality, including:

  • Information regarding deaths after 28 days of vaccination, from any cause.

  • Information regarding deaths involving or due to COVID-19 after receiving COVID-19 vaccination.

This requires complex analysis linking vaccination records to death registrations. The provisional release date for these publications is September 2021. Once publication dates are finalised, they will be announced on our Release Calendar.
