1.  Please be kind enough to supply the number of all deaths between 1 September 2021 and 1 September 2023?

2.  Please inform me of the total number of deaths between 1 September 2019 and 1 September 2021?

3.  Please inform me of the total number of deaths between 1 September 2017 and 1 September 2019?

Thank you for your request. 

We are responsible for producing mortality statistics for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration. 

The total number of registered deaths in England and Wales for the date ranges requested are as follows: 

  • 1 September 2021 and 1 September 2023 - 1,171,884 (Provisional) 

  • 1 September 2019 and 1 September 2021 - 1,174,707 

  • 1 September 2017 and 1 September 2019 - 1,067,903 

Please note, 2023 data is provisional. Some deaths are registered weeks or even months after the date of death, see our report on registration delays which gives more detail on why these delays occur.
