You asked

I would be grateful if you would provide me with the number of deaths registered in the UK since 2015 to this present time.

I am unsure whether you register Scotland and Northern Ireland separately, if so I would like these as well.

Thank you for your request.

We are responsible for producing mortality statistics for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

Deaths registered so far in 2020 can be found via the following publication: Deaths registered weekly in England and Wales, provisional. This provides provisional counts of the number of deaths registered in England and Wales, by age, sex and region. This provides data up to 27 November 2020.

Annual death registration totals are available within our annual Deaths Registered Series, these totals can be found in Table 1. Annual data is available up to 2019. The annual dataset for 2020 is scheduled for release in July 2021.

You can also extract this information for England and Wales and include other variables i.e. age, sex via our online explorable datasets on our NOMIS interactive webservice. This provides mortality statistics for England and Wales (including some subnational geographies) broken down by calendar year of registration 2013-2019, age, sex, underlying cause of death and area of usual residence of the deceased. Data for 2020 will be published on NOMIS and released in July 2021.
