Thank you for your enquiry.

ONS mortality data comes from the information collected at death registration.

We use the term "due to" a cause of death (e.g COVID-19) when referring only to deaths with that underlying cause of death. We use the term "involving" when referring to all deaths that had the cause mentioned anywhere on the death certificate, whether as an underlying cause or not. For more information on cause of death coding see our User Guide to Mortality Statistics.

ONS only hold mortality data for England and Wales. For numbers of deaths due to COVID-19 for Scotland and Northern Ireland, you will need to contact National Records of Scotland and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Centre, respectively.

We have collaborated with the constituent countries to produce headline COVID-19 figures for the UK. However, this only includes deaths involving COVID-19, not due to COVID-19.

Numbers of deaths involving COVID-19, registered between March 2020 and December 2021, United Kingdom are published here as part of our monthly mortality analysis publication. The next update will include data for Q1 (Jan to Mar) 2022 and will be published in our monthly mortality analysis on 27 April 2022.

Deaths due to and involving COVID-19 for England and Wales, January 2020 to February 2022, is available in our latest weekly death registrations publication. You can access the data for 2021 and 2022 here. Data for 2020 are available here. Figures for England and Wales are shown in the table below.

Detailed footnotes regarding our weekly death registrations data are available in the 'Notes' tab of our latest weekly deaths publication.
