COVID-19 deaths by age from March 2020 to June 2021

2020 data

We hold analysis showing deaths involving COVID-19 and deaths due to COVID-19 by 5-year age band. This can be found in Table 2 of the following publication and has been pasted in the below table: Deaths due to COVID-19, registered in England and Wales: 2020.

When we say that a death 'involved' COVID-19, we mean that COVID-19 was mentioned anywhere on the death certificate, possibly along with other health conditions, not necessarily as the underlying cause of death. When we say that a death was 'due to' COVID-19, we mean that COVID-19 was the underlying cause of death, because it was either the only health condition mentioned on the death certificate, or it was the one that started the train of events leading to death.

2021 data

We also hold analysis showing deaths involving COVID-19 by 5 year age band for 2021. Please see the 'Weekly COVID-19' tab in the following publication: Deaths registered weekly in England and Wales, provisional.

From 2 January 2021 to 25 June 2021 (latest available data), we have provided the summed weekly totals. This publication is updated every Tuesday.
