You asked

I wish to make a freedom of information request regarding those that have died from the COVID-19 Virus and those that have suffered adverse reactions to the COVID-19 Vaccination Programme.

Deaths solely down to the COVID-19 Virus:

Since the start of the pandemic deaths from COVID-19 have been recorded via anyone dying within 28 days of a positive COVID-19 test. As of 28 June 2021, this number is 128,103. Please confirm how many of these deaths are solely down to the COVID-19 Virus and do not involve individuals with no serious underlying health conditions.

Pregnancy and Miscarriages:

How many women who have suffered a miscarriage were vaccinated against COVID-19 compared to those women who were not vaccinated against COVID-19?

Thank you for your enquiry.

The data referred to in your request (deaths within 28 days of a positive test), are produced by Public Health England (PHE) and published via the government's COVID-19 dashboard. Our data is different to that produced by PHE. Therefore, we do not hold the data you have specifically requested. You can read a blog by Professor John Newton of Public Health England about the complexities of counting COVID-19 deaths and the different methods used. Please contact coronavirus-tracker@phe.gov.uk for queries about this data.

Our provisional weekly deaths are derived from the formal process of death registration. Analysis showing deaths where COVID-19 was recorded as the sole condition on the death certificate and COVID-19 deaths by main pre-existing condition are available in in our Monthly mortality analysis, England and Wales. Please see the following dataset to view this information: Pre-existing conditions of people who died due to COVID-19, England and Wales.

We hold births and deaths data, including live births, still births and infant deaths. Unfortunately, we do not hold data regarding miscarriages. NHS Digital may be better placed to answer your enquiry. They can be contacted via email at enquiries@nhsdigital.nhs.uk.

Figures for deaths involving adverse reactions to the COVID-19 vaccination (not restricted to first or second vaccination) are available in Table 12 of our Monthly Mortality Analysis dataset, There are currently 3 deaths registered with the aligning ICD-10 codes for this (U12.9). The latest data available is May 2021. This publication is due to be updated with data for June on 23 July 2021.

You may also be interested to know that we are currently working on analysis on all aspects of the relationship between COVID-19 vaccination and mortality, including:

  • Information regarding deaths after 28 days of vaccination, from any cause.
  • Information regarding deaths involving or due to COVID-19 after receiving COVID-19 vaccination.

This requires complex analysis linking vaccination records to death registrations. The provisional release date for these publications is August 2021. Once publication dates are finalised, they will be announced on our Release Calendar.

You can also find figures for the period December 2020 to June 2021, published by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), here.
