Thank you for your request.

ONS are responsible for producing mortality statistics for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration.

Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia deaths

2001-2020

We have published a back series as part of our 21st century mortality, which contains all-cause mortality data by ICD code, age and sex, 2001-2020, England and Wales. You can filter on the underlying cause ('column A') for each year and filter on ICD-10 code 'B206'.

We have annual mortality data by cause from 2013-2020 available as part of our explorable dataset on our NOMIS webservice. This explorable dataset can be used to search for deaths by ICD code B206 for deaths in England between 2013 and 2020. Please follow instructions below.

  • Select the geography (England and Wales, regional or by local authority).
  • Select Age -- All ages or 5 year age bands.
  • Select Gender -- Total or Male/Female
  • Select rates -- All deaths, rates or percentage of population for example.
  • Select cause of death (ICD10 code search is available). B206
  • Select format (Excel or CSV for example)

Unfortunately, we do not hold analysis specifically for deaths registered in England between 2011-2021 that are coded to 'B206' (Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia). As outlined, in our response to FOI/2021/3177 we can produce this as a bespoke request, we can extract deaths where the underlying cause was 'B206', England, 2011-2021. Bespoke tabulations of mortality data for England are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate).

Such enquiries would fall outside of the Freedom of Information regime and should be made to: Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.

Sepsis deaths

Deaths where sepsis was the underlying cause of death between 2018 to 2020 can also be obtained via the NOMIS webservice above. The ICD10 code used for sepsis is 'A41'. We do not hold analysis for deaths in 2021 that were coded to 'A41' yet. We can also produce this as a bespoke request for you for sepsis deaths in England between 2018 and 2021 if our published data does not meet your needs.
