You asked

I would like to request data on the number of deaths caused by anaphylactic shock in the UK over the past 10 years. My interest in this information is to better understand the prevalence and trends of anaphylactic shock-related deaths across the country. To enable a more comprehensive analysis of the data, please provide this data broken down into the following categories:

  1. Annual deaths: The total number of deaths caused by anaphylactic shock for each year in the specified 10-year period.

  2. Regional data: The number of deaths caused by anaphylactic shock for each region of the UK (e.g. North East, North West, South East, South West, etc.) for each year in the specified 10-year period.

  3. City data: If possible, the number of deaths caused by anaphylactic shock for major cities in the UK for each year in the specified 10-year period.

Thank you for your request.

We are responsible for the production of mortality data for England and Wales, driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

Our mortality data comes from the information collected at death registration. All the conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10). From all of these causes an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules.

Anaphylactic reasons are coded as a secondary cause (contributory mention), not the underlying cause and therefore are not available on our NOMIS webservice or in our publications.

However, we do hold the following user requested datasets relating to deaths registered in England and Wales involving this condition. In the definitions tab on each dataset, you will find a list of the ICD-10 codes used:

Further analysis is available via our bespoke services route. Special extracts and tabulations of mortality data are available to order from the Health Analysis and Pandemic Insight (HAPI) Customer Service team.

Such extracts are subject to disclosure control, legal frameworks, resources, and agreement to costs under the ONS Charging policy. As this information is reasonably accessible via another route, even if only accessible on payment, Section 21(2)(a) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) applies.

If you would like to receive more information or to request a quote for this work, please contact Health.data@ons.gov.uk.

Further information may also be available from the UK Fatal Anaphylaxis Registry - BSACI.
