You asked

Between 1980 and 2023 how many lost their jobs in the UK?

We said

Thank you for your query regarding those losing their jobs between 1980 and 2023 in the UK.

People may lose jobs for a number of reasons, including dismissals and redundancy. Estimates of the number of people who lost their jobs as a result of redundancy are available from the Labour Force Survey (LFS), a survey of UK households. These estimates are published on a rolling monthly basis and can be found on the ONS website in table RED01 SA: Redundancies levels and rates. Unfortunately, these estimates are only available from 1995 onwards. We also publish breakdowns of redundancy by age, industry, and region in table RED02: Redundancies by age, industry, and region. These estimates are available from 2009 onwards.

We also publish experimental estimates of the number of potential redundancies from Insolvency Service HR1 forms and number of employers proposing redundancies, from April 2019 to July 2023. These are available in table HR1: Potential redundancies

Unfortunately, we do not routinely publish estimates of the number of people who have been dismissed from their posts.

If you wish to obtain any further information, you can request an ad-hoc analysis to be produced by contacting our social surveys team. We may charge for this service, in line with our charging policy, depending on the amount of time taken to develop the analyses and undertake quality and disclosure control processes. Unfortunately, estimates of redundancy prior to 1995 are not available through this service as we do not hold redundancies data prior to 1995.
