This response has been produced using data from the Inter Departmental Business Register (IDBR.) This is a register of all businesses registered for VAT and/or PAYE. The employment data are mainly derived from administrative sources and supplemented by data from our business surveys. This source has been chosen, for your request, because the IDBR contains country of ownership data.
The official source of employment data from the Office for National Statistics is the Business Register Employment Survey, however, these data do not contain country of ownership information.
The total number of employees in the UK is 30,247,029 (as at March 2019.) The percentage working for American owned businesses is 4.8%.
