With regards to weekly or monthly death data, all causes, I see that the ONS's October 2020 all causes death data includes non-residents.

  • When did you start including non-residents in the death count?

  • What is a non-resident?

What is a non-resident?

The Office for National Statistics is responsible for the production of mortality statistics for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected on the death certificate at death registration. Additional information that is provided to the registrar is the deceased's place of usual residence at the time of death. For purposes of reporting statistics this is at country level. Therefore, in relation to ONS mortality statistics, a non-resident is an individual who has died in England or Wales but their place of usual residence while they were alive was outside these two countries. An example of this, is a person who is normally resident in Scotland who travels to England and sadly passes away there.

When did you start including non-residents in the death count?

The weekly deaths bulletin provides provisional figures on deaths that were registered in England and Wales. We include the figures of non-residents to accurately reflect the total number of deaths registered. Historically, we have always included non-residents death registrations.

However, in the 'Weekly deaths 2020' table we do not include non-residents in the figures when breaking down 'Deaths by region of usual residence'. Non-residents would not fall into this category. Please see the footnotes of this table for information around the parameters of this data.

We also publish monthly mortality analysis for England and Wales, by age, sex and country. This analysis excludes non-residents.
