You asked

I would like to request the average age of the population to a resolution of postcode districts. Please could we have this information nationally?

We said

Thank you for your request regarding the average age of the population to the resolution of postcode districts for the South-West and Nationally.

We do not hold mid-year population estimates at postcode level, so unfortunately we are unable to provide the average age of the population by postcode.

We do however produce median age data at local authority level.

The median age is that at which half the population are older, and half are younger. This can be found in Estimates of the population for the UK, England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, table MYE 6 – Median age of population for local authorities in the UK, mid-2001 to mid-2020.

You may also be interested in the following dataset, which was published on our website in 2018 that includes median ages for Local Authorities (UK), Middle Super Output Areas, Lower-layer Super Output Areas, Wards and Clincial Commissioning Groups (England) and Parliamentary constituencies (E&W): Population estimates: median ages for administrative, electoral and census geographies. This data is available for the years mid-2002 to mid-2017.

Should you require any further information about this data, please do not hesitate to contact us directly at pop.info@ons.gov.uk.
