We said

Thank you for your request.

We are responsible for the production of mortality data for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland.

We receive headline figures from NRS and NISRA which can be found in our Vital statistics in the UK: births, deaths and marriages publication. This provides total mortality figures for the UK up to 201. Data for 2022 is due to be published mid-2024, this will be announced on our Release Calendar.

Deaths in England and Wales for 2022 can be found in our Deaths registered in England and Wales publication. This will be updated with finalised 2023 mortality data for England and Wales in Summer 2024, to allow the inclusion of late registrations.

Provisional figures can be found in our Deaths registered weekly in England and Wales, provisional in table 1.

If you require further information, please contact Health.Data@ons.gov.uk

If you wish to obtain data for 2022 and 2023 for Scotland and Northern Ireland, please contact NRS and NISRA at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.
