Thank you for your enquiry.

Deaths due to natural causes

The official guidance on the completion of the Medical Certificate of cause of death (MCCD) advises "Never use 'natural causes' alone The term "natural causes" alone, with no specification of any disease on a doctor's MCCD, is not sufficient to allow the death to be registered without referral to the coroner. If you do not have any idea what disease caused your patient's death, it is up to the coroner to decide what investigations may be needed."

Therefore, there will always be a specific cause of death assigned to the deceased MCCD.

Our NOMIS webservice will provide in the form of annual data, a breakdown of causes of death at Middle-Layer Super Output Area (MSOA) or Local Authority level for Richmondshire from 2013 to 2021.

  • Select the geography (England and Wales, regional or by local authority)

  • Select Age - All ages or 5-year age bands

  • Select Gender - Total or Male/Female

  • Select rates - All deaths, rates or percentage of population for example
  • Select cause of death (ICD10 code search is available)

  • Select format (Excel or CSV for example)

For reference, an MSOA is a statistical geography created for the census that is bigger than an individual postcode but not as large as a local authority with a typical population of 7000-10,000 people.

All cause and COVID-19 at local authority level registered in 2022 are reported weekly by our Customise my data service in the data set Death registrations and occurrences by local authority and place of death. Please note this data is still provisional and subject to change, to allow the inclusion of late registrations which are deaths referred for Coroner investigation. Please note this does not include age disaggregation.

Suicides in England and Wales by local authority

We hold the following analysis Suicides in England and Wales by local authoritywhich provide number of suicides, suicide rates and median registration delays, by local authority in England and Wales, registered from 2001 to 2021.

Deaths due to vaccine injury

COVID-19 vaccination

Deaths which include adverse reaction to the COVID-19 vaccination as either the underlying cause or contributory mention are recorded in table 12 as part of our Monthly Mortality Analysis. The latest data available is September 2022.

As of September, there have been 55 deaths attributed to adverse reaction to the COVID-19 vaccination, of which 47 have this as the underlying cause of death in England. There are no registered deaths in Wales.

Due to the small numbers involved, we are unable to provide a further geographical breakdown of this data due to disclosure control. Further information on disclosure control is available in our Policy on protecting confidentiality in tables of birth and death statistics

Deaths due to other vaccines

Deaths caused by vaccines can be found in the linked mortality publications below using the following ICD-10 codes: Y58 to Y59.

  • NOMIS - This is an interactive web service that provides death registration statistics (numbers and rates) for England and Wales, for the period 2013 to 2020 by age group, sex, underlying cause of death and area of usual residence of the deceased.

  • Deaths Registered Series - Provides deaths registered between 2006 and 2020, by age, sex, selected underlying causes of death and the leading causes of death. Contains death rates and death registrations by area of residence and single year of age.

  • 20th Century Mortality and 21st Century Mortality provides annual data on the number of deaths registered in England and Wales, from 1901 to 2020, by age group, sex, year and underlying cause of death, as defined using the International Classification of Diseases (ICD).

Infant mortality

Our Child and infant mortality publication derives information from both the  Child mortality (death cohort) tables and Infant mortality (birth cohort) tables.

The majority of the Office for National Statistics death statistics are based on when a death is registered (registrations) rather than when it occurred (occurrences). In most cases, this makes little difference in monitoring trends because the difference between when the death occurred and when it is registered is small. However, in the case of infant deaths, this delay can be much longer and many deaths occurring in a year will be registered after that year has finished. Table 1 shows that between 10% and 12% of infant deaths that occurred in a reference year were registered the following year. This proportion is larger than for all deaths, for which approximately 5% that occurred in a reference year were registered in a different year. Figures for all deaths that occurred in a reference year by the year of registration are available in Table 6 of the impact of registration delays to mortality statistics tables.

As part of our publication schedule, we publish at the start of the year, 2020 data was released in February 2022 and 2021 data is provisionally scheduled for publication in February 2023.

Table 2 of the Infant mortality table provides deaths by area of usual residence, with Richmondshire found on row 79.
