You asked

I am currently looking for information on Sepsis.

As per the Freedom of Information Act, I would be really grateful if you could help me access any data you have on the matter? Specifically, I am looking at:

  • The prevalence of sepsis across different age groups in the UK.
  • How often sepsis is misdiagnosed in the UK.
  • Statistics on sepsis recovery, and similarly sepsis-related deaths.

I noted that on your website you have some data on sepsis-related deaths; however, as these only go up to 2018, I wondered if you had any additional more recent data, and also had the raw data from these findings.

Deaths where Sepsis was the underlying cause or contributory mention

We are responsible for the production of mortality data for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

We hold the following user requested data set Deaths involving sepsis, England and Wales: 2001 to 2021. This provides the number of death registrations where sepsis was the underlying cause of death (Table 1) or mentioned anywhere on the death certificate (Table 2). Figures are presented for England and Wales combined, based on deaths registered between 2001 and 2021.
