Thank you for your request.

We are responsible for the production of mortality data for England and Wales. This is derived using information collected from the death certificate at death registration. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

Our available publications on COVID-19 by ethnicity are available via the following links:

Updating ethnic contrasts in deaths involving the coronavirus (COVID-19), England and Wales: deaths occurring 2 March to 28 July 2020.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) related deaths by ethnic group, England and Wales: 2 March 2020 to 15 May 2020

The datasets above are the first COVID-19 death statistics we have ever produced on ethnic breakdowns. We have used self-reported ethnicity characteristics data from Census 2011 and linked this with COVID-19 death registration data, followed by significant modelling exercises. This enables us to calculate the impacts and deaths COVID-19 is having on ethnic groups. Due to the increase in the number of COVID-19 we are assessing how to resume this dataset safely, although there is no confirmed publishing date.

In order to disaggregate COVID-19 deaths by ethnicity for smaller areas than England and Wales, we would need to create bespoke analysis. Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, Public Authorities are not obligated to create information in order to respond to requests. We therefore consider this to be information not held.

If you would like to discuss these statistics further, please contact health.data@ons.gov.uk
