You asked
Please supply how many people have died within 28 days of receiving a COVID-19 vaccine. I would like this to include all manufacturers of vaccines and any dose ie 1st, 2nd and booster.
We said
Thank you for your enquiry regarding COVID-19 deaths by age.
Unfortunately, we would be unable to provide you with deaths by brand of vaccination or include deaths at 28 days after vaccination. To fulfil this request, we would need to undertake complex data linkage of mortality data and NIMS (National Immunisation Management System) data and use a high level of statistical skill and judgement to create the bespoke analysis. Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, Public Authorities are not obligated to create information to respond to requests. We therefore consider this to be information not held.
However, we have published weekly counts of deaths, population and age-standardised mortality rates by vaccination status in our most recent publication on this topic, "Deaths involving COVID-19 by Vaccination Status, England: deaths occurring between 2 January and 31 December 2021". We use 21 days after vaccination as this is when the vaccine is deemed to be effective.
Please note this publication does not include deaths attributed to an adverse reaction to the COVID-19 vaccine.
Table 5 of this publication shows monthly age-standardised mortality rates by age-group and vaccination status for deaths involving COVID-19 from January to December 2021.
Table 8 gives an overview of deaths involving COVID-19, all cause deaths and all deaths by vaccination status.
This includes the following vaccine status.
- unvaccinated
- vaccinated with 1 dose only, less than 21 days after vaccination
- vaccinated with 1 dose only, at least 21 days after vaccination
- vaccinated with 2 doses, less than 21 days after second vaccination
- vaccinated with 2 doses, at least 21 days after second vaccination
- vaccinated with 3 doses, less than 21 days after third or booster vaccination
- vaccinated with 3 doses, at least 21 days after third or booster vaccination
The data are for England only, as vaccinations data for Wales is not yet available to be linked to the mortality dataset and the Public Health Data Asset (PHDA) covers England only.
