We are responsible for the production of mortality statistics for deaths registered in England and Wales. However, we have published some UK-wide statistics in collaboration with National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA). NRS and NISRA are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively, should you require further information on statistics for these countries.
COVID-19 deaths by age group
We publish weekly deaths by age and sex in England and Wales in our weekly deaths dataset. Please see table 4 of the 2022 dataset edition for deaths involving COVID-19, broken down by five-year age groups and sex.
For 2021 and 2020 dataset editions, please see 'COVID-19 - Weekly registrations' tab.
We do not hold analysis specifically for the age breakdowns you have requested. However, we can produce this analysis for you as a bespoke request. Special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate). Such enquiries would fall outside of the Freedom of Information regime and should be made to: Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.
Deaths by COVID-19 vaccination status
We have produced deaths involving COVID-19 or all cause deaths after receipt of the COVID-19 vaccination, which is available via the following link: Deaths by vaccination status, England. This is an analysis of deaths involving COVID-19 by vaccination status that occurred between 1 January 2021 and 31 December 2021 in England.
This publication includes weekly age standardised mortality rates for deaths involving COVID-19 by vaccination status and a detailed analysis of deaths involving COVID-19 which occurred in fully vaccinated individuals. This dataset was produced through complex linking of census data to vaccination data held by NHS. A breakdown by vaccination status for deaths involving COVID-19 is available in table 1. Mortality figures for non-COVID-19 deaths is available in table 2.
Risk of death involving COVID-19 by variant
In addition to COVID-19 death breakdowns, we have also recently published analysis on Risk of death involving coronavirus (COVID-19) by variant, England. This dataset gives an insight into risk of death in people who infected by Omicron and Delta COVID-19 variants.
