FOI ref: FOI/2022/4590

You asked

Under the FOI act can you tell me how many people died from COVID-19 only in the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle, Cumbria in 2020.

We said

Thank you for your enquiry,

We have published deaths in Carlisle in 2020 in our Death registrations and occurrences by local authority and health board, these are for all deaths and deaths involving COVID-19.

For deaths involving COVID-19 in Carlisle in 2020, where COVID-19 was listed as the underlying cause or a secondary cause that contributed to the death we can confirm that 53 people died in a care home, 13 at home, 111 in a hospital and 2 in the category 'other communal establishment'.

We have not produced analysis for deaths where COVID was the sole condition by local authority in 2020. We may be able to produce a bespoke extract for deaths where COVID as the sole condition.

Special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate). Such enquiries would fall outside of the Freedom of Information regime and should be made to: Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.

Unfortunately, we are unable to provide information to you specifically for the Cumberland Infirmary as this information involves very low figures, which would allow individuals to be identified. Additionally, this would provide identifiable information about a specific body corporate. Section 39 of the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007 (SRSA) renders it a criminal offence to disclose information held by our organisation for statistical purposes that would identify an individual or a body corporate. As we are prohibited by law from publishing statistics in which individuals can be identified, Section 44(1) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) applies.
